>>>>>NMZS10 & The Old Hrvatski Klub opening

Two of Cairns’ most curious artists will launch their new art-space next month, with a series of new works, and some surprise curiosities.

Nicholas Mills and Zane Saunders have long and diverse careers across the arts in Far North Queensland, and in 2010 they promise an interesting program of activities at the Old Hrvatski Klub Artspace (old Croation Club).

The former club-house has been adapted into artist studio’s and media space, and allows the 2 practitioners the opportunity to centralise their production outputs, from incubation to presentation.

They will launch their first exhibition event, NMZS10, will a variety of new art works and assorted curiosities.

While both artists have strong contemporary outputs, (in performance, sound, screen and installation) they both come from strong visual arts backgrounds, and will be presenting both visual works and media/performance works.

Saunders studied visual arts in Cairns as one of the first generation of students at the TAFE Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts faculty, and has since diversified into a broad performance practice.

Mills studied at Victoria College in Melbourne, and has a long background as a arts-manager and creative producer in the Far North region. He produces the annual On Edge media and performance festival in Cairns.

The opening nights activities will also include some fun for the punters: rock ‘n’ roll ping-pong, and Nick’s old school disco party.

NMZW10 will launch at the Old Hrvatski Klub, 240 Scott St, on Saturday the 6th of March, from 6.00pm. It is donation entry and there is a licensed bar.

After a serious accident in August 09, 5 weeks in hospital, and some 9 weeks pushing wheelchairs and crutches around, Nicholas is encouraged by his recent RADF Grant Approval for the project 'Intonation'. This 2 month project will allow Nicholas to develop a new dynamic interactive work, featuring 5.1 surround sound and triggered video and lighting.

Thanks to the Cairns Regional Council and Arts Qld RADF program. It is anticipated that a 'work in progress' showing will take place in March 2010, and the final work will be presented as part of On Edge 2010 in July.
