>>>>>Then
Nicholas Mills is a Cairns based arts-producer and sound and media artist, with over 20 years experience in the arts, music and cultural sector of Far North Queensland. From a humble beginning studying painting at Victoria College, investing countless hours exploring the underground arts, music and sound culture of 80's Melbourne, Nicholas found himself embedded into the local arts sector in Cairns from 1989 until the present.
With many years association with arts management and project development with Graft ‘n’ Arts, and later as acting manager of Tanks Art Centre, Nicholas has been an advocate and key facilitator of music and contemporary arts industry development in Cairns for over 16 years.
Through a dedicated framework of access, equity and risk taking, he helped to initiate a seminal underground arts culture in Cairns. As a dynamic artsworker, he played a critical role in supporting the then emerging careers of Endorphin (www.endorphinmusic.com), Dan Sultan (www.dansultan.com), Deline Briscoe, Morgyn Quinn (Rudekat Records, Island Time Festival), nd many more.
He established the youth arts/music festival Backdrop (formally Little Day Out) in 1992, and the broader MusiCairnS festival in 2000.
Through MusiCairnS, he also developed, produced and programmed the industry development events Industry Heat Music Seminar, and the Elec: Tropica Dance and Urban music awards, and initiated Cairns’ first world music festival, Up Tempo.
In the 1990’s he was instrumental in community radio 4CCRFM in producing numerous programs, and unique music and sound events. This critical radio medium interaction developed his synergies for DJing and eclectic music and festival programming.
Nicholas has personally developed a sound art culture in the Far North, through MusiCairnS events such as Experi-muse and Elec: Tropica, and independently produced gigs and events over some 16 years in numerous Cairns venues (such as the Spark new music series).
During all this time he has continued to practice his artistic craft, somewhat hidden from his public persona: his personal practice taking a secondary seat to his arts facilitation. Nicholas has also long supported indigenous music, and has worked with the Briscoe Sisters, the Pad Boys and most recently Zennith over many years as mentor and manager.
He was also acting Executive Officer for indigenous organization Umi Arts for 18 months. (2006/2007).
